That's too funny.

One thing I like best about living in SoCal are the unexpected accents; the Indian guy with a Texas drawl, the Koreans and Israelis who speak Spanish fluently with a Mexican accent, the black person with a Cuba accent...it makes you kind of stop making assumptions about people based on the color of their skin. If I have a question, depending on where I am in LA, I will ask white people if they speak English, because too often, they don't!

Re: You talk funny

We perceive that we don't have accents, but we do. That's what we told Ilia too. They have rallies to show the kids what prizes they can get if they turn in this many or that many. I told my kids straight up, "NO fundraisers." I will not spam my family and friends just so they can get a prize that I can get at the dollar store. Josh was adamantly against fundraisers and would say, "If you want to give money to the school, give money to the school, but NO fundraisers." Using the kids to get money in this manner on any part of the chain sends the wrong message.

Re: Broke and Trying to Move

I think things will work out okay, you all need to move in with your husband’s mother, it may be cramped, awkward and demoralizing but as a mom we do what we have to. Be honest and open with your kids they'll understand and have a greater appreciation for what it takes to fend for them.

Head up and shoulders strong...you'll make it through and be stronger for it. :)

Re: She’s a swimmer now

I was terrified of the water when I was a kid... I remember taking swimming lessons and not wanting to go under water. We did "ring around the rosie" every class but I'd never go down. Then one time the instructor made sure she was next to me when we did it and kicked my feet out from under me and I went under. I was SO MAD and betrayed. But it wasn't long after that that I finally took to it. I went on to taking lessons up to the point where the next step was lifeguarding (I was too young or I would have done that). I was also on the swim team (pretty successfully) and doing backflips off the high dive board. It is amazing how that "switch" just turns on. I bet Ilia will amaze you with all the stuff she does in the pool!!

Re: Broke and Trying to Move

Any or all of you can stay with me, A. I don't suppose you're interested in moving to Planet Georgia, I could probably clear out the upstairs bedroom. A tad crowded for a family of four, but roomier than a MiniCooper.

I guess that's one more advantage of getting older, you only have yourself & spouse to worry about.

Re: How about a $50 check?

Frankly, the best fundraiser that I've seen is scrip. That's one thing about getting old that you can look forward to: no more fundraisers. Until they reproduce, anyway.

The reason they have to do the fundraisers is that everyone shits their pants when school taxes have to go up a penny. I think the Facebook users will enjoy FriendFeed not to say that they aren't "in tune" with today's latest technology, but because it gives them yet another avenue to communicate with people. I personally don't use much of FB but can appreciate new and simple applications.
